✝️ Fasting
Fasting helps us detach from distractions and open our hearts to God. The Church asks all Catholics to observe the following:
Required Catholic Fasting & Abstinence
Ash Wednesday & Good Friday
Fasting is required for Catholics ages 18–59.
One full meal
Two smaller meals that together do not equal a full meal
No snacking between meals
Abstinence from meat is also required for ages 14 and older.
All Fridays of Lent
Abstinence from meat for ages 14 and older.
Who is excused?
Those with medical conditions, pregnant or nursing mothers, the frail, and those whose health would be harmed are not bound by the fasting laws. The Church encourages them to choose another meaningful penance.
Voluntary Lenten Practices
Beyond the required norms, Catholics are encouraged to:
Reduce screen time
Limit unnecessary spending
Fast from negativity, gossip, or unhealthy habits
Add daily prayer or Scripture reading
❤️ Almsgiving
Lent invites us to generosity — supporting those in need and strengthening our parish mission.

Pastoral Visit of Pope Leo XIV — March 1, 2026
Pope Leo XIV visited the Parish of the Ascension of Our Lord Jesus Christ in Quarticciolo on the Second Sunday of Lent, March 1, 2026. The Holy Father celebrated Mass with the community and offered words of encouragement for the parish’s mission in the neighborhood.
Highlights of the Homily
In his homily, Pope Leo XIV reflected on the Christian life as a journey of trust, drawing from the call of Abraham and the Gospel account of the Transfiguration. He spoke of the courage required to let go of false security and to follow God even when the path is uncertain. The Pope emphasized that Jesus reveals His glory on the mountain not to keep the disciples there, but to strengthen them for the road ahead—toward Jerusalem, sacrifice, and new life.
The Holy Father urged the faithful to “listen to Jesus,” allowing His light to transform fear, discouragement, and the wounds of daily life. He reminded the community that the mission of the Church is to bring this light into the world, beginning with the neighborhood they call home. Faith, service, and a spirit of communion, he said, are the ways Christians become signs of hope and instruments of renewal.
Encouragement for the Parish Community
Pope Leo XIV praised the parish for its vitality and courage despite the challenges of the surrounding area. He highlighted the parish initiative Facciamo Comunità, which strengthens belonging and hospitality, and commended the Magis youth program for inspiring young people to pursue a courageous and authentic Christian life.
The Holy Father encouraged the parish to continue being “leaven of goodness and justice” in Quarticciolo, reminding them that the light of Christ is already at work in their community and that their witness brings hope to many.
